It was an absolute pleasure to join the Copenhagen Democracy Summit this year. All the efforts that Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the whole Alliance of Democracies Foundation team put into supporting democracy and security in Europe and much beyond are impressive. Combating Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) was one of the key topics.
Ursula von der Leyen suggested an impressive and very much needed initiative - European Shield that should scale European-wide efforts to protect from Russian and other hostile disinformation.
It is what Europe and the whole free world needs right now.
Why is this initiative important?
According to the 2nd EEAS report, FIMI attacks have increased significantly in the EU and worldwide in 2023. They will only intensify with the upcoming elections in June in 2024, and Europe should be more prepared.
The European Shield will be designed to fill a gap in Europe's capabilities to address new forms of hybrid warfare, including disinformation campaigns. This means AI-powered support in detecting FIMI, unanimous standards for investigating information manipulation, and easy and safe ways to share investigation results with partners in an extremely short time span within one ecosystem. This will result in sanctions for malicious actors under the DSA Act.
Who Presented Osavul?
At the Summit, Osavul's Chief Business Development Officer Dmytro Bilash presented its vision on how such initiatives as Democracy Shield should operate using modern technologies for detection, mitigation, and collaboration on combating FIMI.
